Piece By Piece - Training

We provide a comprehensive Training package delivered by experienced trainers.  Sessions are designed to increase participant’s knowledge and understanding of the issues of weapon carrying and how to plan effective educational interventions with young people. Training includes support on planning for your client group and suggestions on how to use ‘Piece by Piece’ in a variety of settings. 

Training is available to organisations at a cost of £300 for 2 ½ hours. This price includes:

  • 2 experienced trainers
  • Initial free copy of Piece by Piece resource (with options to purchase further copies at reduced rates))
  • A viewing of the film materials
  • Background to weapons crime locally and in the UK
  • Suggestions on using the accompanying resources book, including identification of sessions appropriate to your client group

About Our Trainers...

Ben Thurley
Ben Thurley

Ben has worked for Nottingham Youth Offending Team for 6 years, primarily with the volunteers, more recently with developing new resources for staff to use. He has also worked in a variety of settings within the criminal justice arena, such as Probation Approved Premises, local authority secure children's homes and hostels for adults with a mental health/ offending background.

Key areas of training experience
- Six years delivering sessions to volunteers on the youth justice system, communication and child/adolescent development.

Philosophical statement (re young people / weapon crime)
- Interventions with young people should be 2-way – both parties should learn something.


Sue Matthews
Sue Matthews

I have 23 years post qualifying experience of working with young people and their families known to the Criminal Justice System. I am currently based at the Nottingham Youth Offending team and am a practice manager in the Intensive Supervision team, providing a specialist service to young people who present the most significant risk of harm

Key areas of training experience
- I am responsible for co-ordinating the training and development needs of Nottingham YOT. I have extensive experience of supervising students on Social Work and Post Qualifying courses, and have been involved for many years in part time lecturing at local universities about the Criminal Justice System and effective practice. I am currently a research fellow with the LSE examining the efficacy of community based provision for young women in the Criminal Justice system.

Philosophical statement (re young people / weapon crime)
- I remain committed to providing a high quality service to young people, providing them with the necessary resources and techniques to make informed choices about their lives.


Paul Langley
Paul Langley

Paul Langley has been a freelance trainer since April 2005, having worked as the Youth Work Training Officer for Nottingham City Youth Service for the previous 7 years. He has over 30 years experience of youth work, in both voluntary sector and local authority settings, as a volunteer, part time and fulltime worker, and senior worker. Paul created the activities that accompany the Piece by Piece Film resource.
